John Turner is a musician and sound artist interested in the aesthetics and politics of cybernetic systems. He creates multimedia installations as sites for experimental human / machine interactivity, audiovisual environments which transform and respond to the audience's physical and sonic gestures. He draws influence from phenomenology, sonic materialism, and the political economy of cybernetics, as well as internet horror, video game/virtual embodiment, and conspiracy culture.
His composition ‘ECCO’ (2023) has been performed by the HUB New Music Ensemble, and his ‘Sphere of No Form’ installation was shown at the New Media final selection at the Ivy Film Festival.
He is currently a fourth year student at Brown University pursuing degrees in Music Technology and Philosophy. His upcoming Honors Thesis project explores the political aesthetics of surveillance and data-extraction technologies through a large-scale multimedia installation. He works as a Studio Technician at Brown’s Steinert recording studios, and helps teach an introductory course on Max/MSP.
He also sings and plays guitar in a country shoegaze band, and writes/releases his own original music.
